Glaucoma often occurs when the optic nerve is hurt by high eye pressure or intraocular pressure (IOP). If it is not treated, damage to the optic nerve can occur. One may be able to see straight ahead, but sight around the sides of the eye may be lost. If glaucoma is not treated at all, it could cause blindness.
XALATAN (pronounced zal'-a-tan) is the #1 prescribed eye pressure–lowering medicine for people with high eye pressure or open-angle glaucoma. It is produced by Pfizer.
Your eye is filled with a watery fluid. This fluid flows out drainage channels in the front. If these drainage channels are clogged, the fluid builds up. This causes the pressure in the eye to increase.
Elevated high eye pressure can cause damage to your optic nerve that can’t be reversed.
XALATAN reduces eye pressure with just 1 drop a day. It is used in each affected eye.
Studies suggest that XALATAN works by opening the drainage channels in the eye. This helps fluid drain, relieving high eye pressure.
