Chronic Dry Eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) also known as Dry Eye Syndrome is a medical condition that can result from the eyes’ reduced ability to produce tears due to inflammation. Recent studies show it affects more than 3.2 million Americans.
Research has shown that Chronic Dry Eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) can be the result of a functional problem in the tear-producing glands of the eyes. This not only reduces tear production, but creates an insufficient amount of tears to lubricate or nourish the eye.
It’s important to remember that while environmental factors can further aggravate Chronic Dry Eye, they are not the cause. One cause of Chronic Dry Eye can be the body's reduced ability to produce tears due to inflammation.
Produced by Allergan, RESTASIS® Ophthalmic Emulsion helps increase your eyes’ natural ability to produce tears which may be reduced by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye. Restasis did not increase tear production in patients using topical steroids or tear duct plugs.
Important Safety Information:
RESTASIS® Ophthalmic Emulsion should not be used by patients with active eye infections and has not been studied in patients with a history of herpes viral infections of the eye. The most common side effect is a temporary burning sensation. Other side effects include eye redness, discharge, watery eyes, eye pain, foreign body sensation, itching, stinging, and blurred vision.
Please see prescribing information for RESTASIS® Ophthalmic Emulsion.
