Cataracts

A cataract is a loss of vision caused by a clouding of the eye lens (please examine the eye anatomy). The lens consists of water and proteins which can over time clump together and obstruct the light passage.

By the age of 80 over half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

These are some of the typical symptoms of a cataract: cloudy or blurry vision, colors seem faded, glare, headlights, lamps, or sunlight may appear too bright, poor night vision, double vision or multiple images in one eye, frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Cataracts in early stages could be addressed by a combination of new eyeglasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses. However, surgery is often the only solution for the cataracts that progressed and threaten your vision. During such surgery, we remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial precision-manufactured lens. The need for a surgery could be caused by other eye conditions such as macular degeneration or glaucoma: these conditions could be effectively addressed after the cataract is removed.

Please educate yourself on the benefits and risk of a cataract surgery and feel free to speak with us to make the decision that is right for you.
