IOP
|
|
The intraocular pressure, or IOP, is determined by a balance of the production and drainage of liquid inside the eye.
An eleveated but not yet damaging IOP is called ocular hypertension. Often at risk for developing it are African Americans, people with a family history of the condition, those who are nearsighted, have high blood pressure, or are diabetic. Since no symptoms go with ocular hypertension, it is highly recommended that people over 40 and those in a high-risk category for glaucoma have their pressure checked every year.
An elevated IOP can cause pressure within the eye to increase and damage the optic nerve. Some medical science research shows that 40% of your optic nerve can be damaged before you even know it! Many studies show that permanent damage to your optic nerve can occur before you notice any difference in your vision.
Our patients benefit from regular check ups as well specific IOP medications. You can examine some such medications here.
