Blepharitis
|
|
Blepharitis is an inflamation of the eyelids. Very dry or very oily skin, dry scalp, dandruff, rosacea, eczema and other diseases may cause this condition. In fact, the exact cause of blepharitis is unknown.
These are the typical symptoms associated with the eyelid inflamation: eye irritation, burning, tearing, foreign body sensation, crusty debris (in the lashes, in the corner of the eyes or on the lids), dryness, and red eyelid margins.
A recurring condition, blepharitis requires constant effort on the part of the doctor and the patient. For dry eyes you may need artificial tears or lubricating ointments, or silicone punctal plugs. Steroids may also be used to control inflammation.
A blepharitis treatment usually focuses on intensive therapy to rapidly bring the disease under control (acute phase) and then indefinitely continue the minimum amount of therapy that is necessary to keep the disease quiet. Various warm compresses, eyelid massage, and lid scrubs may help you contain the inflammation in the future.
