Old Eyes
|
|
Old eyes, or presbyopia, is the loss of the ability to focus up close that occurs as you age. Most people are between 40 and 50 years when they realize for the first time that they cant read objects close to them. The letters of the phonebook are too small or you have to hold the newspaper farther away from your eye to see it clearly. At the same time your ability to focus on objects that are far way remains normal.
Tens of millions of people in the United States are estimated to have develop or developing presbyopia.
Aging causes presbyopia. Therefore it is different from astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness. Presbyopia is generally believed to stem from a gradual loss of flexibility in the natural lens inside the eye.
In addition to contact lenses and glasses, new surgical procedures provide effective solutions through the implantation of accommodative intraocular lenses (IOLs).
