Farsightedness

Skip Navigation Links

The refractive process is similar to the way a camera takes a picture. The cornea and lens in the eye act as the camera lens. The retina is similar to the film. If the image is not focused properly, the film (or retina) receives a blurry image.

If the eye is too short from front to back or its focusing power is weak, light rays focus behind rather than on the back of the eye (retina). This is farsightedness, or hyperopia.

While young people may not even know that they are farsighted because the lens is flexible, by middle age most farsighted people need corrective lenses to improve their near vision.

Hyperopia is not the same as presbyopia known also as 'Old Eyes'.
