Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Skip Navigation Links

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a treatment of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma. The goal is to drain fluids out of the eye, reducing IOP that can cause damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision.

SLT uses a specific wavelength to irradiate and target only the melanin-containing cells in the trabecular meshwork, incurring no collateral thermal damage to adjacent non-pigmented trabecular meshwork cells and underlying trabecular beams. SLT induces the release of cytokines triggering macrophage recruitment and other changes leading to IOP reduction. Basically, this procedure enhances outflow of fluids from the eye. The laser beam leaves the tissue undamaged by light and therefore could be repeated.

SLT requires a specially designed laser with precise wavelength and short pulse. Effective and safe, SLT is not associated with systemic adverse effects. You will be sitting is a regular exam chair and your will be anesthetically numbed. The laser is applied to the edge of the eye's iris. The procedure takes only a few moments.
